The
Centre for the care of Street Children of Hoi An cares for up to 20
boys and 14 girls, aged from 8 to 19 years old. Before coming to live
at the Centre, the children lived in areas surrounding Hoi An. Many of
the children are from rural villages outside of Hoi An and from the
Cham islands (one of island groups of the coast).
All
the children have lost either one or both of their parents. Some of the
children that have a parent are sent to Cahors because their family is
too poor to afford schooling for them. In other cases where one parent
remains, it is typically their mother who has remarried and her new
husband does not want the children from the former marriage.
All
of the children attend school at various times on Monday to Saturday,
where they learn English in addition to regular curricula, such as
maths, science and Vietnamese studies.
As
soon as the older children graduate from high school, they are required
to leave the facility so that children on the waiting list can come to
the centre.
